Flowers

When Henry and I go for walks he often has to wait while I admire and take pictures of other people's flowers.  It has been a long winter and I am so excited for every new  bloom.  Henry just wants to mark them and keep moving.

I've been working on our yard, trying to make it pretty and colorful without investing too much money since we're renting. The front yard is sunbaked and gets a lot of dog traffic, so I started by planting a border of rosemary and lavender.  The soil isn't great but I've been turning it under and adding old leaves from the back yard. Luckily my upstairs neighbor likes the cottage garden look and loves big zinnias and cosmos!  I also planted creeping phlox, nasturtium, speedwell, and have alyssum and snow-in-summer sprouting in the basement.  When it warms up I'll add the zinnias, cosmos, love-in-a-mist, sunflowers, marigolds, snapdragons, and poppies (all from seed).  I should have taken a "before" picture, but believe me, even this is a huge improvement.

We're expecting a few days of light rain so I started digging up and seeding the bare spots in the back yard with wildflower seed.  Apparently grass has never grown well there and I'm tired of looking at the dustbowl/dog wallow. (yes, I made the mistake of letting Henry wear his thundershirt outside). Hopefully there will be dramatic "after" photos in a few weeks!
