Seed Swap Today!

The Belmont Victory Gardeners are hosting a friendly seed swap and will be available for questions, advice, and seed starting demos. Open to all gardeners – whether you are a member of a community garden, grow vegetables or flowers in your yard, or would like to try sowing seeds for the first time.

Sunday, March 6

3:00 to 4:30pm

Belmont Public Library

Assembly Room

Bring viable vegetable or flower seeds to share and go home with new varieties to try. Divide seeds into labelled, sharing-sized envelopes before you arrive to save time. Most commercial seed packs can be divided into 2 or 3 "swap-sized" packets.

Come even if you don't have seeds to share. There will be seeds and conversation for everyone.

When are seeds too old to swap?

For today's seed swap, we'll have a viability chart similar to the one above. (pic is from Master Gardener class yesterday) If your seeds are older than what is recommended for successful germination, they should go in the "Old Seeds" section. Plenty of people will still be interested in trying their luck with older seeds. I have marked all my divided swap packets with the year they were purchased or packed.

Many kinds of seed are perfectly fine a few years after harvest, but keep in mind that the percentage of seeds that germinate will go down each year. Sow older seeds more thickly or do a germination test.
